Running Profiles – Hal Higdon
If you’ve read Runner’s World magazine or virtually any other running-related publication in the last few decades, then it is almost certain you’ve read Hal Higdon’s writing.
Widely acknowledge as the premier running author, Higdon has been writing about running for nearly half a century.
His writing first appeared in Runner’s World in 1966, in just the second issue, making him the longest-running (no pun intended) author in the magazine’s history. Not only is he an accomplished running author, he has written about a variety of topics during his career as a writing freelancer which has spanned his entire adult life.
An accomplished runner himself, he has run well over 100 marathons with several outright wins and a huge amount of age-group wins.
His book Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide (aff. link) is easily my favorite running book of all-time. The amount of training wisdom packed into the book is astounding. Not only have I learned more from this book than any other, no other piece of running writing has inspired me as much.
Higdon truly loves the sport of running, as it shines through in every piece he writes. His accomplishments as a runner, although impressive, pale in comparison to what he has done to promote the sport of running and educate runners of all skill levels.
